3ds Command Network Rendering Guide

Submitting 3ds Command render jobs to Deadline

How to submit Autodesk 3ds Command render jobs to the Deadline render farm management system.

While the 3dsCmd plugin was developed for use with VIZ, it can also act as an alternative to our original 3dsmax plugin for Max renders. However, this plugin has less features than the original, takes longer to start rendering, and the error handling isn't as robust. It is recommended that this plugin only be used to render Max jobs when using features that don't seem to be working properly with our original 3dsmax plugin. You can also submit 3dscmd jobs from the Monitor.

Step 1: Open the Submission Dialog

Select the Deadline (3dsCmd) menu item that you created in the script setup.

Step 2: Set Your Submission Options

The general Deadline options are:

  • Name: The name of your job (if left blank, it will default to "Untitled").
  • Comment: A simple description of your job (can be left blank).
  • Department: Your department (can be left blank).
  • Pool: The pool that your job is submitted to.
  • Group: The group that your job is submitted to.
  • Priority: Your job's priority (0 = lowest, 100 = highest).
  • Machine Limit: The maximum number of machines that can render your job at one time (specify 0 for no limit).
  • Task Timeout: The number of minutes a slave has to render a task for this job before it requeues it (specify 0 for no limit).
  • Limit Groups: The limit groups that your job requires.
  • Job Dependencies: Jobs that your job is dependent on.
  • Submit As Suspended: Submit your job in the suspended state.
  • Delete When Complete: You job is automatically deleted after it completes.

The 3ds Command specific options are:

  • Frame List: The list of frames to render.
  • Group Size: The number of frames per task.
  • Force Build: If rendering with Max 9, you can force 32 bit or 64 bit rendering. This setting will be ignored if rendering with VIZ, or with Max 8 or lower.
  • Show Virtual Frame Buffer: Enable the virtual frame buffer during rendering.
  • Apply VideoPost To Scene: Whether or not to use VideoPost during rendering.
  • Override Bitmap Pager Setting: Override the Bitmap Pager setting to be enabled or disabled.
  • Split Rendering: Enable split rendering. Specify the number of strips to split the frame into, as well as the overlap you want to use. Note this feature is only available for 3ds Max 9 (SP1).
  • Run Sanity Check On Submission: Check for scene problems during submission.
